B2B Social Media Prediction for 2012, Part 6: Online to Offline

The biggest shift in 2012 will be bridging of online to offline in social media.  O2O is now a integrated interconnected cross-connected strategy that fits well with each other and if you are not utilizing it you will be missing out in the new year.

To finish up my series on the B2B social media predictions for 2012 I stress why online and offline are critical for any size business and what you must do in both spaces.

Digital Marketing Lessons From the NHL: Expanding Reach and Sustaining Success

It’s no secret that the NHL is a hard-hitting, violent sport.  It’s a part of the league’s DNA, but it also holds the NHL back.

In order to complete its comeback as a brand, the NHL needs to focus on the great content produced on the ice and limit the negative attention stemming from injuries and violence.  From a marketing perspective, John Collins and the league are already working to increase transparency and cut down unnecessary violence in the game.  In this video, we discuss how the NHL can build on recent victories and continue to grow as a brand.

B2B Social Media Prediction for 2012, Part 5: The End of Twitter

Twitter will be going away in 2012…for social media.  Just simply look at the elements that are being tweeted the most, photos, articles, and videos.  The conversations are moving away from Twitter and becoming more of a broadcast medium.  Businesses need to understand this shift and change accordingly.

In part five of my series I address prediction number nine and ten in Jeffery Cohan’s 12 B2B Social Media Predictions for 2012.

Digital Marketing Lessons From the NHL: Working With Advertisers

The NHL’s comeback from the depths of the sports world didn’t happen overnight.  It took a fundamental shift in the way the league thought of itself for the transformation to truly take place.

In order to make the league more advertiser-friendly, specifically for internet video advertising, the NHL changed its mindset from a licensing company to a media company.  The league launched its own TV Network, launched international websites based around extensive research, and put a greater emphasis on internet video production.  In this video, we take a closer look at how the league used a new digital strategy to make it easier to build relationships with advertisers, and boost revenue as a result.

B2B Social Media Prediction for 2012, Part 4: The End of the Debate on Social Media ROI?

There has been a long-standing debate among social media experts over whether it is possible to measure social media ROI.  What we are seeing now is that it is possible – like other marketing initiatives the way to measure social media campaigns is through creating “proxies” for sales in terms of leads and their position in the sales funnel.

As for mobile – the marketers see mobile as a new and different communications platform whereas what it is to the consumer is just another channel along the continuum of communication from a customer to a company.

Digital Marketing Lessons From the NHL: Making Stars Accessible

For fans to truly connect with a sport and go from passive viewers to zealots, they need to feel like they know the star players.  For the NHL, this has long been a struggle.

Part of the NHL’s re-vamped social media marketing strategy included an effort to bring the fans closer to the best players on ice.  From creating innovative ad campaigns with Alex Ovechkin, to bringing fans inside the locker room leading up to the Winter Classic, the NHL has put a much greater emphasis on social media branding.

In this video, we delve deeper into how John Collins and the NHL have leveraged their digital assets to increase awareness of their game, and bring fans closer to the action than ever before.

B2B Social Media Prediction for 2012, Part 3: Expanding the Conversation

After you have started your social media hub and have begun utilizing content conversations, you are ready for the next par:  expanding the conversation.  The play used to be focusing on the conversations closest to home, but that is no longer  the case.  The more eyeballs you can get on the content you are creating, the more reach your brand has and the better you can measure brand mentions.

Here is my analysis of the following B2B social media predictions for 2012:

  • 2B marketers expand social media followers
  • Social media treehuggers lie down in front of bulldozers:

Digital Marketing Lessons From the NHL: Live Events

One of the biggest challenges for the NHL coming out of the lockout was to gain the attention of the casual sports fan. Here is the challenge the NHL faced, as told to Fast Company, in the words of John Collins:

“All our marketing assets, all our communication assets, were inside our games.  They were inside our arena, inside regional and national telecasts. We had no ability to break out beyond that and capture that casual, much broader sports fan environment.”

John Collins of the NHL broke out of the norm with the Winter Classic.  Using live event production, Collins and his league effectively took over a day.  In this video, we take a look at how creating buzz around a major event helped shape the new digital strategy of the NHL.
